Shabbat Tunes

Over the millennia, Jews have developed many, many tunes for our prayers. At Beth El, we use a mix of traditional and modern nusach (melodies) during our services.  As part of an effort to become a more inclusive community and to continue to help people become leaders of our services, this page contains recordings of those tunes that we use most often.  Most of these have been recorded by former B’nei Mitzvah Coordinator, Jessie Lunk.  Many of the recordings for Shabbat morning were recorded by Rabbi Greyber and included melodies from elsewhere in the Jewish world.  The melodies are in full harmony and feature instruments so that the community may enjoy the full experience.

Please note that some of the recordings come from Camp Ramah and Ikar-LA.

Feel free to listen, download, and share these melodies. The listed page numbers refer to Siddur Sim Shalom.

Shabbat Tunes

Please note that there are tunes for Shabbat Evening (Kabbalat Shabbat, Ma'ariv) and Shabbat morning (Birkot Hashachar, Pesukei D’Zimrah, Shacharit, Shabbat Torah Service, and Shabbat Musaf).

On Kabbalat Shabbat, we sing six psalms (numbers 95-99 and 29) that correspond to the six days of Creation. The first of these psalms, recorded here, call on Israel (95) and the nations (96) to worship God. This recording begins at the box on page 254, four lines from the end of Psalm 95 (“arbaim shana”) and continues through the end of Psalm 96 in the middle of page 256.
