The Food for the Summer Program

May 30, 2016 by bethel Leave a Comment

The Food for the Summer Program seeks to increase the number of children in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro area that receive free summer meals through available government funding.  Over 3,400 students in the Chapel Hill-Carrboro city schools are currently enrolled in free or reduced lunch, and only 900 of those children received a free meal last summer.  Our goal is to feed over 1,500 children this summer, and we can not do that without the generous donation of time from volunteers.

The program will run from June 13th through August 19th, Monday through Friday.  The meals will be served during common lunch hours (11:30 to 1:30pm) at 18 to 20 different meal sites in the area that consist of mainly residential properties where children in need have been identified.  Volunteers are needed for two primary roles: to transport meals from where they are made and to distribute meals at the meal sites and interact with the children.  The meal sites themselves have been released on the website and can be viewed by clicking the ‘Volunteer’ tab and viewing the map there.

If someone is interested form your congregation in signing up to volunteer, please direct them to our website where they can click on the volunteer link and submit their contact information, availability, and interest in getting involved.  The website is foodforthesummer.org
