Requesting an Aliyah

Beth El wants to celebrate your birthday with you!

The Beth El community hopes you'll celebrate your birthday by accepting our offer for a bimah honor. Would you be interested in being called for an aliyah (saying the blessing before and after the Torah reading), g'lilah (wrapping the Torah) or hagbah (lifting the Torah)? We can arrange this for a Shabbat close to your birthday that you plan to be at Beth El.

What's the next step? Just reply to this email and let us know which Shabbat you'd like to be called and if you have a preference for which honor you'd like. People are available to review with you the steps for your honor if that would be helpful. Please state in your reply that you would like some help preparing and someone will contact you to check in. Please reply no later than noon on the Thursday before you are requesting the aliyah, and as soon as possible if you would like help preparing. If you are not interested in an aliyah, you do not have to reply.

If you request a Shabbat that has a bar/bat mitzvah or other celebrations, we will do our best to meet your request but may check back with you to see if you can be flexible.

All people who come to the bimah are expected to wear a tallit and cover their heads. Tallisim and kippot are available in the lobby for anyone's use. The Torah service tends to begin around 10:15. Please be at services by then so you don't miss your honor. When you arrive in the sanctuary, if possible, let the gabbai know you are there for your bimah honor.

We hope you have a wonderful birthday.

ps: If there is another Shabbat you'd like to be called to the bimah for any reason including to celebrate an anniversary, mark your recovery from an illness, or to acknowledge having safely returned from a journey, please contact the Beth El office at 919-682-1238.
