The Bible (1 Kings 7:23) describes a circular object in the Temple that was 10 cubits in diameter and 30 cubits in circumference. This suggests that the value of pi is 3... or does it? We will dig into two millennia of rabbinic conversations that seek to answer this question. Pie will be provided!

Now is the time to pick up a new skill to add to your own toolbox AND open the door to a new way of contributing to your synagogue community (or any synagogue community)! The Torah contains a multitude of mysteries, but chanting doesn't have to be mysterious at all. Molly May--student cantor, Talmud Torah teacher, and music educator with a long history of helping people to practice--will guide you through the process of learning trope symbols and applying them to the chanting of Torah. You'll need to have a comfortable level of Hebrew decoding; no other experience is required. There will be an opportunity to chant Torah on Saturday, April 8 (Chol HaMoed Pesach). Classes will be held at Beth El on most Mondays at 7PM in February and March with an online option as needed.

"The ta'am of the ta'amim:  How the ta'amim deepen our understanding and interpretation of the text"

Ta'am  (טעם): definitions include taste, flavor, purpose, and a cantillation mark ("trope").
In this course, we'll discuss how the ta'amim, through their purpose and 'flavor', provide for listeners and also for the reader a deeper understanding of the Torah text.
Topics to be covered include:  how the ta'amim influence pronunciation, including the position of a ta'am on a word;  distinguishing between ta'amim that look alike and why this is important;  and how the ta'amim indicate how a verse should be parsed and which words or phrases in a verse are stressed.

"Rabbinic Responses to Suffering, and Ours"

In this session, we'll look at some ancient rabbinic responses to suffering, as well as modern thinkers such as Rabbis Harold Kushner and Bradley Shavit Artson. We won't solve the problem of why good people suffer, but hopefully we'll gain greater understanding of what resources are offered to us from the Jewish tradition.

On many Thursday evenings this winter/spring, Rabbi Greyber will lead a Talmud study group from 7 to 8:30pm in the Sager Beit Midrash. We will be learning the 3rd chapter of Moed Katan, "V'eilu M'galhin." The Talmud notoriously wanders from topic to topic, but this chapter includes rabbinic conversations about Jewish mourning practices. Knowledge of Hebrew and Aramaic will be helpful, but not necessary. Everything will be done in translation, but students should be able to commit to attending most class sessions.

Students should purchase a translation/commentary of Tractate Mo'ed Katan. Either Artscroll  (which is what will be used in the class) or Koren.

    Class dates:
    February: 9, 23
    March: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30
    April: 13, 20, 27
