For the intricate threads of synagogue life to weave seamlessly, the gabbai are essential. Rooted in tradition, the gabbai, or “collector,” assumes a multifaceted role within our congregation. They serve as stewards of our rituals, guardians of our communal bonds, and orchestrators of our sacred gatherings.
At Beth El, our gabbaim are the guiding hands behind every Shabbat and holiday service, ensuring that each prayerful moment unfolds harmoniously. From assigning aliyot to offering support to Torah readers, they embody the spirit of inclusivity, making certain that everyone feels at home within our sacred spaces.
At Beth El, our gabbaim recruit and organize the prayer leaders for every Shabbat and holiday service. They assign aliyot, stand beside Torah readers, and make sure that our community welcomes newcomers and acknowledges milestones in the lives of its members.
Standing steadfast upon the bimah, the gabbaim embody the quiet strength that sustains our community. If you feel called to lead services or wish to communicate with our gabbaim collectively, email Bernie Fischer.
If you would like an honor at services or have a special life cycle event to be recognized with an honor at services,
please email the gabbaim at aliyot@betheldurham.org.
