Topic: Which Way to Jerusalem? Adventures in Non-Euclidean Halacha
Tradition teaches that we should face toward Jerusalem in prayer, but in a spherical world, which way is that? We’ll look at a collection of sources, ancient and modern, in order to understand both the motivation behind praying toward Jerusalem and the mathematical details of determining the right direction. No knowledge of Hebrew or spherical trigonometry is required.
While he’s not busy serving as a judge on The Voice, Adam Levine is an assistant professor of mathematics at Duke University. He will be teaching a weeklong course on rabbinic mathematics at the National Havurah Committee Summer Institute
